Scripture of the Month

Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it. But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.

Habakkuk 2:19-20

Words to Live By: Twelve of the Most Powerful Words in Christianity

Sermon Series by Greg Parks

Language is an amazing gift from God. Through the use of words, we give expression to our faith, and in turn, our faith gives meaning to our words. Within the realm of the English language, there are certain words that express deep facets of our Christian faith, words like “restore,” “seek,” “suffer,” and “obey.” By studying and contemplating on the power and truths behind these words, we come to a deeper understanding of who we are in relationship to a loving God. This series explores twelve such words- twelve of the most powerful words in Christianity.

Restore To restore is to return something to its original state. Man can only restore what has already been broken; God can restore what has yet to be broken. 19:51
Choose Don't be a slave to sin. How does being a slave to God still preserve my free will? Am I still my own master, or does God choose for me? Romans 6 21:10
Home To "go home" is to return to our roots, to the "place of our fathers". As God calls us "home", how do we "return" to a place we have not yet seen? 23:17
Remember Throughout salvation history, God has used the act of memory to strengthen his people. What will you remember, and how will it affect your faith and the faith of the next generation? 30:20
Give Our blessings are meant to be shared. We "give of our means" but how do we give of what we don't yet possess? God doesn't look at what we gave, but what we have left. 33:37
Influence Can we grasp the power of Influence? Like an iceberg, we only see the tip of this powerful concept. 35:11
Judge "Judge not, lest ye be judged!" It has a bad stereotype, but is it always wrong to judge? 37:54
Seek What we seek determines almost every facet of our life. We seek God...but He is seeking us too. How do we find each other, and why does it seem God hasn't "found" everyone yet? 28:49
Suffer It's perhaps the greatest question posed to Christianity: How can a loving God allow suffering? So what do we tell those people? Do we need to redefine what suffering really is? 31:04
Believe It's the mother of all questions -"Why believe in God?" Perhaps we need to continually ask this question. 19:30
Obey Is there more to obedience than just following the rules? Why is obedience such a "big deal" to God? Why is man always trying to downplay its importance? 27:20
Victory God wins. No problem there. But how God won and what His victory looks like doesn't line up with man's preconceived ideas. 22:56
